As you may know, ELLI is currently conducting a training program dedicated to advancing lighting designers in design theory. This includes the principles of composition and understanding how to use critiques, as a tool to advance with.

This past week, we covered the final principle--Unity, as understood in art. We addressed how the different elements of an artwork come together to provide a sense of cohesion and wholeness. As part of this study, we looked at how unity can be achieved by ensuring proximity, simplicity, and repetition in design.

The photo below was provided by Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting, where Tim Ryan and his team provided an excellent example of unity. Each of the parts (compositionally speaking) which include balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern & rhythm, and movement work together to ensure unity in this space. There is no 'negative space' experienced in this setting because it naturally flows to the purpose and emphasis of the front door.

Well done, Tim. This program is called, "Lighting Design Awareness," and it will be offered again in January of 2023. It's the foundation to true lighting design advancement. Although this program was developed primarily for landscape lighting design professionals, it can apply to most lighting design applications...the concepts are the same. Please feel free to reach out to me if you are interested to sign up for future offerings--class spaces are limited to 8-10 people. The reason for this is to ensure that all involved are engaged and participating

  • Topic: Testimonial of Lighting Design Awareness program

Many of you have seen the previous testimonials by some of the participants of our recent course called, Lighting Design Awareness, but I thought it would be appropriate to share the thoughts from one of our advisory team members. This is George Winterling of Winterling Lighting Design located in Stuart, FL.

George is a well-seasoned professional within the landscape lighting community for about 45 years! He used to work with John Watson of TX, aka 'Mr. Moonlighting', and his work can be found nationally and internationally. George has joined the ELLI team to provide his extensive insights into our training programs. Here's what George had to say:

"Congratulations to the first class of ELLI graduates! The Lighting Design Awareness program was an outstanding course on landscape illumination benefitting lighting designers as well as architects.

This course emphasized balance, contrast, rhythm...each of the elements of composition, including emotional awareness, among other design aspects that are not generally taught. It allowed the class to work together and exchange ideas that are seldomly available to designers.

This program offered insights for both the outdoor lighting professional and the landscape architect to understand two things--how to work together and how to experience their projects at night in a better light. This is the type of design education that has been missing within our industry. What a pleasure it was to be apart of this effort."

We are truly blessed to have George as an educator and advisor to this group and team approach. I am excited about the offerings to come in 2023. More announcements will come about this.

  • Topic: Light Color Enhancement for Purpose

I wanted to share some insights I've gained through experience and practice. One of these learned skills has included the use of various color temperatures with 'white' light.

Recently, I completed a landscape lighting project that had a large, 8' tall metal sculpture piece. It was natural, exposed metal, so it had a complete layer of rust as its finish. I wanted to have this architectural piece stand out, as a focal point against the surrounding backdrop of Sequoia trees.

However, the challenge came when I saw that the Sequoia trunks were a warm-colored reddish brown, and the fencing behind was brown. I was using a warm-white colored light, 2700K, on all these background elements (tree trunks, fencing, and swing). If I illuminated the sculpture with the same color of white light, then it would more readily blend in with the rest.

Therefore, my solution was to use a cool-white light, 5700K, on this piece. I increased the lumen output to over double that of the background lighting, and it made the sculpture look more like a stainless steel. In addition, this color use spilled above and onto the outer portion of the Sequoia branches to make the green stand out more.

It's important to play with varying colors and effects because you can learn a lot from this.
