In the example below, the users of this garden space wanted to 'feel' safe, happy, and comfortable. This lighting design was provided by Tim Ryan's team at Lighthouse. It's a beautiful space that is very inviting.

    Let's consider the words I used above...safe, happy, comfortable, and inviting. What would one expect from this...more light or less light? For people to feel safe and comfortable, there needs to be enough light for the atmosphere and tasks desired. And, to make this space more fun/happy or enchanting, you can see they utilized smaller string lights above the open gazebo top Also, you can see the wonderful shadow display at the bottom of each open column support--another nice touch.

    Our group of participants just shifted into the next phase of educational studies. Up to this point, we spent the past 8 weeks addressing the principles of composition, as applied in artworks. We are now putting it all together and performing Design Critiques.

    We'll be spending the next two sessions practicing this design tool, which will solidify what has been learned. In addition, we'll begin to touch on the emotional value of each lighting design studied. And our last two sessions will focus on this 'affect', which is what I consider the most challenging of aspects of this work.

    The Experiential Landscape Lighting Initiative (ELLI) is the only lighting design program available that truly advances one's skill set and knowledge, as it relates to landscape lighting design. More updates are to come.
