    “It was getting to the end of the project and we asked ourselves what is the next frontier of lighting and growing,” said Runkle, who is a horticulture professor at Michigan State.

    “We came to the realization that the greatest opportunity and need for information was managing the environment for vertical farming production. We saw the next frontier as growing indoors and the need for research-based information. The name OptimIA came from our focus on optimizing indoor agriculture–Opti for optimizing and IA for indoor agriculture.”

    “We went through the proposal submission process for several years before the USDA approved the grant for the OptimIA project,” Runkle said. “The proposal that was finally approved was to study the aerial environment as well as economics for indoor leafy greens.

    USDA awarded $2.4 million to the OptimIA project in September 2019, which was scheduled to be completed in four years. Runkle is the project director with the funding split between six researchers.     “Erik, Cary and I visited several commercial vertical farms before we started this project,” said Chieri Kubota, who is director of the Ohio Controlled Environment Agriculture Center at Ohio State University. “We received feedback from growers as to what to work on using USDA funding.”

    Based on input from commercial indoor growers, three areas of research were identified:
    1. Develop economic information, including the costs, potential profits and conduct an economic analysis to determine the strategies to improve profitability based on that information.

The economists on our team are working to quantify the costs of production and then determine the greatest opportunities to reduce input costs.

    “There is very little financial information available about this sector of the controlled environment industry. It is very competitive and secretive, so it is difficult to get a clear sense of the economics.     Industry participation opportunities

    "I have known Mark Carlson (creator of ELLI) for close to two decades. When he told me to check out the concepts established on the ELLI website, I was amazed at the amount of information there. This led me to get involved with its mission--'To educate and to separate.' I'm excited about what we can all do to advance landscape lighting providers.

    I am always striving to learn more, so I continue to be involved with many organizations. I'm a part of the mentorship team with the International Landscape Lighting Institute (ILLI) and have been since 2012. I have served the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) for many years, since 2006. And I have hosted business owners at our business in KY, as well as have traveled to several locations to train business owners at their facilities.

    My point in my telling you what I've done is to provide an insight of how the ELLI offering is unique and very much needed. Chris Mitchell is overseeing our business series in educational content as we expand into our 2023 course offerings. He is a seasoned landscape lighting designer and he is one of the few professionals out there to experience and work with several landscape lighting entities. Here's what Chris had to say about ELLI's recent offering: "I have known Mark Carlson (creator of ELLI) for close to two decades. When he told me to check out the concepts established on the ELLI website, I was amazed at the amount of information there. This led me to get involved with its mission--'To educate and to separate.' I'm excited about what we can all do to advance landscape lighting providers. I am always striving to learn more, so I continue to be involved with many organizations. I'm a part of the mentorship team with the International Landscape Lighting Institute (ILLI) and have been since 2012. I have served the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) for many years, since 2006. And I have hosted business owners at our business in KY, as well as have traveled to several locations to train business owners at their facilities. My point in my telling you what I've done is to provide an insight of how the ELLI offering is unique and very much needed. The use of Zoom meetings worked extremely well, as each person in the group could easily fit this into their schedule. It also allowed for group interaction, which was great. What I thought was really important in this learning was that meetings were once per week. This was perfect because it allowed the attendee time to learn the material and then think about it over the week. This ensured that content was not overwhelming and it could resonate with each person before moving on. It also allowed lessons to be put into practice.
